Freewheelers released their debut recording 'Free-world Music' in 2002 to great critical acclaim. Led by Rob Hall on saxophones and Australian trombonist Chris Greive the 'Wheelers weave a musical web of their own distinctive trademark mixing jazz with expressive freedom, heavy grooves, lyricism, wit and virtuosity.
A 'piano-less' quartet, the rhythm section is a changeable feature dependant on where the band is performing. Scotland - Mario Caribe (bass) Alyn Cosker (drums) England - Alex Keen (bass) and Nic France (drums) Rest of the world? We'll keep you posted!
"... don't expect any young-fogeyisms. "Freedom Jazz Dance" is anchored by a volcanic funk beat and the frontline can't seem to get their superb ideas out fast enough. "Joy Spring" has a delicious lilt and a beautiful solo from Greive, and there's also a version of John Scofield's "Softy" that knocks spots off the guitarist's own. Rob Hall's originals are also highly intelligent and ooze personality" (Jazz Review)
